The Ghana Rugby Players Association (GRUPA) continued its “Sevens Keep Fit Tour” in Takoradi on 30th of July, 2016 at the Bompeh SHTS Park, aka Tullow Park. Three teams from GARA (Greater Accra Rugby Association) namely Cosmos Buffaloes RFC, Conquerors SC and Dansoman Hurricanes RFC attended the event.

Cosmos Ladies were also in attendance. Griffons RFC, Dennis Foundation SC and Westside RC from CentWest (Central and Western Rugby Association), also took part in the event.

Dennis Foundation Ladies paired up with Cosmos Ladies in the round one match which saw Dennis Foundation Ladies winning by 15 – 0.

The Cosmos Buffaloes Men's Sevens team won their first round game against Westside RC by 17 – 0. Conquerors won against Dennis Foundation by 12 – 0. Griffons RFC went to battle against Dansoman Hurricanes RFC and the match ended 12 – 10 in favour of Dansoman Hurricanes RFC.

Going into the second round of games, Conquerors, Dansoman Hurricanes and Griffons all won their matches. In the third round, Conquerors, Griffons and Cosmos won their matches.

In all, Conquerors were crowned champions of the day and was followed by Dansoman in second place and Griffons in third place.

According to Ako Wilson, President of GRUPA, the event was to showcase Rugby as an alternative sport to the youth and the general public. It was also to help players keep fit while waiting to kick start the 15s league in November.

The President of CentWest, James Nunoo, was delighted about the turn of events. He also commended the referees for demonstrating command over the game and ensuring discipline.

According to the President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), Mr Herbert Mensah, the GRUPA Sevens Keep Fit Tour serves more than one purpose, and an important objective is to introduce Rugby as sport to areas beyond Accra and Cape Coast where the major teams are currently situated.

“Rugby is the second biggest team sport in the world after football, and the sport has experienced phenomenal growth since its reintroduction to the Olympics Games in the Sevens format of the game,” Mensah said.

The next “GRUPA Sevens Keep Fit Tour” event will take place in Kumasi at the KNUST grounds on the 27th of August 2016.
