Libya avenged their 1982 Africa Cup of Nations defeat to Ghana when the edged out the Black Stars 2-0 in the qualifiers for the 1986 FIFA Wprld Cup in Mexico.
The Black Stars, who had failed to progress from the group stage in their quest to defend the Africa Cup of Nations in 1982, wanted to use the World Cup qualification to show that they were still a powerhous e on the continent of Africa.
However, a determined Libya National Team with revenge full on their minds for losing the 1982 final on home soil, secured a draw in Ghana and handed the Black Stars a 2-0 painful defeat to deny them a place in the 1986 FIFA World. Ghana would have to wait until, 2006 to qualify for their first ever FIFA World Cup. It is very unfortunate that the Black Stars in their golden generation when they won the Africa Cup of Nations, couldn't replicate that feat in qualification games, especially in the 1960's.
But, one could argue that there was only one slot to be decided between Africa and Asia at that time.
