Fifa president Gianni Infantino has vowed to give two more World Cup slots to Africa when the tournament expands to 40 teams, further boosting Ghana's chances of qualifying.

The leader of football's governing body is proposing to expand the tournament and if his vision gets the approval of his board Africa will benefit hugely.

He made this pledge as he is embarking on a charm offensive in Nigeria to woo African football federations who largely did not support him during his campaign.

Infantino, elected in February this year, arrived in Abuja on Sunday on a two-day visit to Nigeria where is he is also meeting some selected African federation chiefs including Ghana's Kwesi Nyantakyi.

There are currently 32 finalists for the World Cup with Africa represented by five teams.

But with Infantino's proposal set to admit eight more teams, Africa stands to benefit more with two more slots for the global competition.

'I believe for the 2026 World Cup, we should have 40 teams and out of the additional eight teams we should have at least two more African teams,' Infantino told reporters in Abuja.

'We are discussing this and I hope I will be able to convince everyone as well.'

During his visit, Infantino met with 18 federation presidents across Africa and also attended the final of a national youth tournament.

The FIFA president is accompanied by new secretary-general Fatma Samoura, who until her appointment in May headed the UN Development Programme in the West African country.
