Volleyball Police dominate southern sector volleyball championship

Koforidua (E/R), July 20, GNA - The Ghana Police male volleyball team whipped the Ghana Army team by three sets to nil to win the maiden edition of the Southern Sector Volleyball Championship held at Koforidua.

The Police team won by 25 - 15, 25 - 14 and 25 - 12 points in all three sets to win the championship.

Eastern Region, the host, defeated the Western Region by three sets to one to take the third position.

Eastern Region won the first, second and fourth sets by 25 - 19, 25 - 21 and 25 - 15 respectively, whiles the Western Region won the third set by 25 - 18.

In the female division, the Police female team defeated the Eastern Region team by three straight sets to win the gold medal.

The Police team won all three sets by 25 - 11, 25 - 21 and 25 - 10.

Ghana Army whipped the Western Region team by three straight sets, 25 - 1, 25 - 13 and 25 - 10 respectively to take the third position.

Richard Amanor of the Police team won the Akro-Ako most valuable player and best attacker of the championship.

Humphry Abeka of the Eastern Region team was adjudged the best middle player.

The best server award went to Francis Fiagbe of Ghana Police with Paul Akan of Police winning the best setter, whiles Western Region's Isaac Owusu won the best Libro, whilst the best opposite player went to Pius Zigah of the Army team.

In the female division, Mary Addai was adjudged the Akro-Ako most valuable player and the best attacker whiles Martha Pabi of the Eastern Region won the best middle player with Juliana Aryee of Eastern Region winning the best setter.

Patricia Ahiafor of the Police team won both the best opposite player and the best server award, whiles, Bettey Kumah of the Western Region team won the best libro.

The Police team, for winning the championship received a trophy, gold medals, certificates and branded Lacoste T shirts from Akro-Ako limited, the sponsors of the championship, in both the male and female divisions.

Whiles the Army male team and the Eastern team won silver and bronze medals respectively as well as certificates.

The Eastern female team received silver medals and certificates with the Army team taking home bronze medals and certificates.

Mr Paul Atchoe, President of the Ghana Volleyball Association (GVA) said he was impressed with the level of performance and sportsmanship exhibited by the participating teams.

He said the association is gradually taking steps to develop the sport to reach every part of the country so that the association can start a national league.

Atchoe said volleyball has moved to a different level and appealed to corporate organizations, philanthropist and individuals to support the association to improve the sport in all parts of the country.
