Accra, June 24, GNA - The Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has announced plans to reintroduce the national amateur boxing league.

In an interview with GNA sports, the Minister disclosed that his outfit is in discussions with the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF) to see how both parties can strategise for the amateur boxing league.

'I am in discussions with the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation; we will have the national boxing league once again. And we shall see how we can have it every week, just like we have in football so that unearth more talents and more boxers and fans,' the Minister said.

According to Nii Lante Vanderpuye, the idea is to help recruit the best talents across the country into the national amateur boxing team, the Black Bombers.

'When we get the best (from the league) they would form the core of the national team, and the national team will never be broken. The national team members will also fight in the league so if you beat a member of the national team your chances of joining the team increases, so we continue that way until we have a set of people who form the core of our future boxing squad' he added.

All Ghana's past world champions in boxing with the exception of D.K. Poison were products of Ghana Amateur Boxing.

The minister however called on television stations to come on board to support in the promotion of the boxing league.

'We will ask television stations to support boxing. Once we have the television stations, the other sponsors will come in. Television is a platform to attract and encourage other sponsors to come in and make boxing bright,' he concluded.
