John Paintsil has disclosed he has retired from active football with immediate effect.

The 34-year-old defender who last played active football for South Africa giants Maritzburg FC has decided to hang up his boot to concentrate on other endeavours of life.

Paintsil was part of the Black Stars team that played in both the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups in Germany and South Africa, respectively.

He took to his his official Instagram page on social media to announce his retirement.

'John Paintsil the Jeonju Man will like to announce my retirement from being a soccer player.'

'I thank God for bringing me this far. Was a long journey from 1999 to 2016. 2 world cups and 5 AFCON and 89 CAPS FOR GHANA,"

Paintsil played domestically for Liberty Professionals and Berekum Arsenal, before he joined the Israeli league. After excelling in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, he secured a contract to English side West Ham United and later joined Fulham FC, also in the English Premier League (EPL).
