MAY 26, 2016 LISTEN

Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey is the only African who could feature in Saturday's UEFA Champions League final between Spanish giants Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at the San Siro Stadium in Milan.

Should he do so, he will be the first African to play in the competition's final since the trio of John Obi Mikel, Salomon Kalou and Didier Drogba helped Chelsea win the 2012 final against Bayern Munich.

In all, just 15 African players have won the UEFA Champions League/European Cup, though that number could be greatly expanded if one included players who were born on this continent but held a different nationality.

That list of winners wouldn't include the legendary French player Just Fontaine, who was born in Marrakech, Morocco. The striker became the first African-born player to feature in the European Cup final when he turned out for Stade de Reims in their 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in 1959 in Stuttgart.

The first proper African national to win the European Cup was Zimbabwe's Bruce Grobbelaar, who helped Liverpool claim the 1984 title with a famous penalty shootout win over Roma - this was the famous occasion when Grobbelaar wobbled his legs to distract the Italian side's penalty takers.

The next African to win the competition was also the continent's first goal scorer in the final: Algeria's Rabah Madjer netted Porto's equalising goal in a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in Vienna in 1987.

Since then, only a further two African players have scored in the final: Samuel Eto'o netted in two separate finals for Barcelona, both of which the Catalans won (2006 and 2009), while Drogba netted for the Blues in 2012 before they beat Bayern on penalties.
