MAY 24, 2016 LISTEN

Manchester United have sacked manager Louis van Gaal with reports of former Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho to take over.

The Dutch manager replaced David Moyes who took over after Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement at the Old Trafford club.

Van Gaal's contact was terminated on Monday, two years into a three-year contract having won the FA Cup for Manchester United over the weekend.

The club however failed to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League, a factor that played a key role in the manager's departure from the Manchester club.

A statement on Manchester United's official website read concerning Louis van Gaal's departure from the club:

"I would like to thank Louis and his staff for their excellent work in the past two years culminating in winning a record-equalling 12th FA Cup for the club (and securing him a title in four different countries). He has behaved with great professionalism and dignity throughout his time here. He leaves us with a legacy of having given several young players the confidence to show their ability on the highest stage. Everyone at the club wishes him all the best in the future," Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward said.
