Police are volleyball champions

Donkorkrom (E/R), May 18, GNA - The Ghana Police Service Men Volleyball team defeated all the participating teams to win the Men's Second National Club Volleyball Championship at Donkorkrom in the Eastern Region.

They topped the table in the men's division with nine points.

The police team beat all the participating teams-Okere United Way, Courts Winners of Donkorkrom and the Immigration Service of Accra by three sets to zero.

Immigration Service, who were second, defeated Court Winners by three sets to zero and also beat Okere United also by three sets to zero to gain six points.

Court Winners of Donkorkrom, the host team, placed third by defeating Okere United by three sets to one and had three points in an all play all tournament.

In the ladies division, only two of the six teams, which registered to take part in the tournament turned up, the rest missed out because of sponsorship challenges.

The Police Ladies team beat the Immigration Service Ladies by three sets to one to be crowned the ladies champions.

In the match, Immigration Service won the first set by 25 to 21 points but the Police team came back strongly to win the second set by 25 to 21 points and went on to win the third set by 25 to 11 points and the final set by 25 to 23 points.

The Ghana Police Service male and female teams will represent Ghana in Ivory Coast for the Africa zone three club volleyball championship in August.

Humphrey Abeka of the Immigration Service team won the best male blocker and the best middle player, whiles the best opposite player went to Richard Amanor of the Police Service team, who also won the most valuable player award. The best server award went to Toreq Sumaila of Donkorkrom Court Winners.

The best setter went to Paul Akan of Police Service whiles his team mate John Armah won the best libro.

The best female blocker went to Rashida Aminu of the Immigration team whiles Martha Parbi also from Immigration won the best middle player, with Mary Addai of Police taking the best opposite female player. Patricia Ahiavor of the Police team won the best server.

The best setter went to Gloria Samboba of Police whiles her team mate, Ajara Mohammed won the best libro, with the most valuable female player going to Mary Addai also of Police.

A special award was given to Mr Mohammed Mumuni, the District Coordinator for Kwahu Afram Plains North in recognition of his support towards the game in the district.

Mr Paul Atchoe, President of the Ghana Volleyball Association (GVA) said, more of such national competitions will be organized in other rural areas to help develop volleyball from the grassroots.

He said for the past three years, the Eastern Region had seen a major development of the sport, and that, if more funds is invested into volleyball, a lot of talents can be discovered in other parts of the country.
