Sports News Today in history: Blackburn Rovers are English Premier league champions
MAY 14, 2016 LISTEN

On 14th May, 1995, Blackburn Rovers sealed their first Barclays Premier League title on a dramatic final day of the 1994/95 season, despite losing 2-1 to Liverpool, as Manchester United fell short by drawing 1-1 with West Ham United.

Kenny Dalglish's Blackburn side were two points ahead of Man Utd going in to the final day and, despite going a goal up against Liverpool at Anfield through top-scorer Alan Shearer, they handed their title rivals the opportunity to snatch the title if they won as John Barnes got an equaliser for Liverpool.

Sir Alex Ferguson's Man Utd team went a goal down against West Ham at the Boleyn Ground but Brian McClair equalised for the visitors and they were piling on the pressure for a victory that would have ensured they won their third consecutive league title.

Blackburn were dealt a further blow when Jamie Redknapp stunned them with a late winner at Anfield, meaning they had to suffer an agonising wait to see if West Ham, who had nothing to play for in mid-table, could resist the advances of a fired up Man Utd team.

Hammers' goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko was the hero at the Boleyn Ground, and for Blackburn, as he kept out the visitors with a string of fine saves, most notably from  Andrew Cole.

United could not get the breakthrough and the Blackburn players and staff went in to raptures at Anfield as they celebrated the title. Blackburn had been top of the league since beating Queens Park Rangers in November 1994, in the midst of a run where they picked up 34 points from a possible 36.

Much of their success was down to the prolific strikeforce of Shearer and Chris Sutton, who scored 49 goals between them as they took the division by storm, before a run of three defeats from their last five matches set up a tense finale.

Rovers, under the ownership of Jack Walker, became the second team to win the Premier League since its inception in 1992. It has been their only title triumph in the competition to date.
