The Royal Golf Club in Kumasi will be the action spot this weekend for the 59th MTN Asantehene Gold Cup Golf Championship.

The event which is to honour the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, tees off from Thursday 5th May to Sunday 8th May 2016 and it is expected to attract a large participation and spectators.

This year’s edition will see both Professional and Amateur golfers play for attractive prizes and trophies.

For this event, the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, King of the Asante Kingdom in whose honour the championship is being played together with Ebenezer Twum Asante, MD of title sponsors MTN, chiefs and other patrons of the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi, will be the center of attraction.

The Pros tournament will feature a lot of Pro Golfers from the whole country like Amos Cobblah, Kwadwo Bani and others competing for the GHc30.000 prize money at stake for the Pros championship, according to Francis Donkor- Baah, Captain of the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi.

The Amateurs Championship which will feature the likes of former Black Stars striker Tony Yeboah and other golfers both male and female will see competitors vying for various prizes including Flat screen TV sets and other trophies at stake.

The 59th Royal Golf event is going to witness a special dinner for the Golfers to be hosted by his Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at Manhyia on Friday night as the Championship coincides with the birthday of the King of the Asante Kingdom.

Over 350 golfers are expected to converge at the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi this weekend to participate in the annual MTN Asantehene Otumfuo Gold Cup tournament.

This year’s competition coincides with the 17th anniversary of the enstoolment of Otumfuo Osei Tutu the second Asantehene.

The tournament is expected to attract both professional and amateur golfers from Kumasi, Achimota, Tema Country Club, Bogoso and Obuasi, among others.

Captain of the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi, Donkoh Baah said this year is a special one to commemorate the anniversary of the king.He said very attractive prizes in the form of cash and trophies would be awarded golfers who excel.

“The Asantehene Golf tournament is the most prestigious tournament on the golfing calendar in Ghana”.

He envisages an increase in the number of participants in this year’s competition from 250 that took part in last year’s event.

“We expect golfers from all over the country with participation increasing from the 250 recorded last year. The professionals will play over four days while the amateurs will compete over two days”.he said.
