Accra, April 18, GNA - The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mr. Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye commended the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF), for launching the Indomie Inter-Club Youth Championship, for school children.

Mr. Vanderpuye, immediate past president of the GWF, said he was happy for the future of the sport adding 'this is a brilliant initiative from the federation. I want to use this opportunity to congratulate the GWF for the initiative, because we can catch them young and nurture them well".

Speaking at the first edition of the championship, he said, the sport has a great potential to become the best discipline in the country. If this continues and we are able to nurture these young ones well, Ghana can win a lot of medals in weightlifting.

He urged other sporting disciplines to take a cue from the GWF, saying 'I want to say that what I am seeing here should be what I would expect from all the other sporting disciplines.

"They must take the discipline to the door step of the school children so that we can catch them young, nurture them and develop them into potential national athletes,' Mr Vanderpuye noted.

The maiden edition of the Indomie Youth and Junior Weightlifting championship, was organized last Saturday, at the Accra Sport Stadium.

Four weightlifting clubs - Migrants Weightlifting club, A1 Weightlifting Club, Pure Joy Weightlifting Club and Accra Titans Weightlifting Club - competing at the under 10,14 and 17 level in both the boys and girls division.

Migrants weightlifting club, stole the show when they won four out of the total seven gold medals on the day to emerge the overall best club.

The most promising star award went to Emmanuel Boateng of Pure Joy, the best female athlete went to Faustina Allotey of Accra Titans, while his brother Emmanuel Allotey of Accra Titans won the best make athlete.

President of the GWF, Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah said this was part of their youth development program and a way of making the sport popular among school children. He thanked the sponsors of the program as well as the participating schools and the athletes.
