Come Sunday, Premier League winners, Ashgold, will square up at the Accra Sports Stadium against FA Cup winners, Medeama SC, in their Super Cup match.

The encounter is to serve as a curtain raiser to the commencement of the much-awaited domestic football season scheduled to kick-start on February 20.

In the last season, Medeama, who finished 11th on the log, suprised the Obuasi lads with a 2-0 first-leg win at their favourite T and A park at Tarkwa but lost 1-2 in the return leg at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.

That, notwithstanding, Ashgold won the league while Medeama also stunned Kumasi Asante Kotoko to lift the MTN FA Cup to the suprise of many.

This suprise element on the part of the Tarkwa-based club could be the trump card in Sunday's game as they have become very difficult to predict.

Interestingly, both Ashgold and Medeama are anticipating a very successful CAF African Club Championship and the CAF Confedrations Cup campaigns respectively and would, therefore, want to use Sunday's match as a dress rehearsal, both for the forthcoming domestic league season and the continental championship.

Even though Ashgold's coach, Bashir Hayford, says he is eager to win but not desperate, he knows what a win on Sunday will mean to his boys psychologically and, therefore, will be counting on skipper Eric Opoku, goalkeeper Fatau Dauda, his dependable defender Joshua Tijani, new recruits, Alhassan Nuhu and Fuseini Nuhu, to make him proud by winning on the day.

Medeama coach, Tom Strand, on the other hand, also knows what is at stake, especially against the league champions, and if his level of optimism could be translated into play by his boys, then Ashgold must be in for a very gruelling drill on Sunday.

Tom Strand seems to be in high spirit as he hopes his boys, Muntari Tagoe, Michael Sai, Patrick Opoku, James Akamenko, Benard Ofori and Enoch Atta Agyei, will jell very well to spring up another suprise.

Nothing but a thriller, therefore, appears to be on the cards for the football-starved fans expected to throng the Accra Stadium on Sunday.
