Conquerors SC join Ghana Rugby Club Championship

Accra, Dec. 1, GNA - Conquerors Sporting Club (SC), a newly registered rugby club from the Ashanti Region has joined the 2015/16 Ghana Rugby Club Championship (GRCC) league.

Mr Steve Noi, the GRCC Tournament Commissioner, who made this known on Monday, said last season, ten teams competed in the tournament and the objective was to get ten teams to compete again in the 2015/16 GRCC, however due to various factors, only seven teams registered for the ongoing competition.

He said the objective is still to end the league season with ten teams before the semi-finals and finals.

Mr. Noi pointed out that ''one can plan as much as you want but circumstances sometimes dictate that one exercises extreme flexibility that may result in the adjustment of plans and tournament organization, even if it complicates matters.'

Mr. Abdu-Aziz Issah, Secretary General of the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) said, the new team, Conquerors SC, has duly registered with the (GRFU) for the 2015/16 GRCC season and has also registered its players on the central Players' Register.

Mr. Herbert Mensah, President of the GRFU, welcomed the addition of Conquerors SC to the championship and also for being the first club from the Ashanti Region.

'Ghana Rugby has for many years focused on only the Greater Accra Region and then branched out to the CentWest Zone that has in hindsight not left us with a solid base there. The GRFU Board is committed to take Rugby to all Regions of the country and this latest addition from the Ashanti Region is hopefully the first step to achieve that mission,' Mr. Mensah said.

He said the spreading of Rugby to the other Regions will also play an important consideration when the World Rugby evaluates Ghana Rugby again for the purpose of full membership.

In order for the team to catch up with the other teams, in terms of matches played, arrangements had been made for Conquerors to clear all its matches in two week in Cape Coast.

Conquerors SC will battle UCC Spartans RFC in their first game on Tuesday December 1, before slugging it out with Griffons RFC on Wednesday December 2, at the St Augustine's SHS Park.
