DEC 1, 2015 LISTEN

Steven Gerrard made his return to Melwood to train with his former club Liverpool yesterday.

The former Reds captain, now with Los Angeles Galaxy, has been back in his home city since the end of the Major League Soccer season and has been welcomed by manager Jurgen Klopp.

But the German has been quick to end any talk of Gerrard making a return to the pitch at Anfield – he is back at the club purely to train.

'I spoke with Steven, one phone call and a few messages,' Klopp said before Liverpool’s win against Rubin Kazan in the Europa League at the start of November. 'He’s a Liverpool legend, of course. But his contract, as I know, is in the USA.

'But during his break time, I told him, “of course you can come whenever you want; you can train with us, do whatever is good for you”. Our doors are always open for him. That is clear.

'But nothing else. Everybody can learn from Stevie, but I am trying to understand.'

It’s an offer that Gerrard is clearly happy to take up. In his punditry role with BT Sport, the former Liverpool captain has revealed he is relishing the chance to see Klopp work up close.

'I'm very excited to go in, obviously I've been there for a very long time and I've come out for a short period but I'm looking forward going into the new set-up, to having a look at what Klopp's all about tactically, what he demands of his players and how much he's changed since the Brendan (Rodgers) era,' Gerrard said.

'You just watch him in those interviews and you just love watching him. He's got that infectious personality and I'm excited to go and spend some time with him.'

Gerrard’s last appearance for Liverpool was in May, and much has changed in the six months he has been away.
