Koforidua Table Tennis Players Shine At Hathiramani Under 18 Championship

Emmanuel Ofori and Kojo Gordon from Koforidua in the Eastern Region were the toast of Table Tennis fans as they displayed real skills and creativity at the finals of the national Under 18 Championship under the sponsorship of Dr. E.A. Quaye, a former player.

Emmanuel Ofori however proved too tough for his opponent and carried home the first prize. His coach, Nana Ebenezer Annag Whyte said there is more to come and appealed ton corporate Ghana to support the game and the players.

Over 70 Table Tennis players under the age of 18 years for the first time compete in this year’s edition of the annual D.G. Hathiramani Memorial Table Tennis Championship.

The organisers of the competition said the aim was to identify young talents, polish and develop them for the next ITTF Africa Cadets and Youth Championship scheduled for Tiziozou, Algeria, in April 2016.

National coach, Anthony Owusu Ansah, said iTable Tennis now gaining much popularity in Africa, it was important for Ghana to take advantage to strengthen her base.

"This could be done by not only casting the net wider to identify talents at the youth level, but also groom them for future tournaments". He said.

According to the coach,creating youth competitions regularly would also induce them to develop much interest in the sport to sharpen their skills. He also tasked sports loving companies to sponsor the rising stars to international competitions as it is the only way they can test their standard.

The competition,which is organised each year to commemorate Indian-born Ghanaian legendary ping-pong administrator, D.G. Hathiramani,saw Augustina Baidoo from the Central Region winning the female category after beating Gina Hackman. Miracle Okyerebea aka Vida placed fourth and expressed her joy to b in the Top 10 of the best in Ghana.

Six regions were represented at the event.
