Stockholm, Nov. 24, (GNA/dpa) - Former Danish international Michael Laudrup is not available for the position as Denmark national coach, the Danish Football Association (DBU) said Monday.

"Michael has pulled out of the dialogue since he doesn't feel that the national coach position is right for him at the moment. He cited personal reasons," DBU Chief Executive Claus Bretton-Meyer said.

Laudrup, 51, has often been mentioned as a favourite to succeed veteran Morten Olsen. Olsen stepped down a week ago after arch-rivals Sweden beat Denmark in a Euro 2016 play-off.

During his active career, Laudrup, regarded as one of Europe's best midfielders, played with top teams such as Juventus, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Ajax Amsterdam. He also played for Denmark at the 1986 and 1998 World Cup finals.

Laudrup later became a coach. His first position was as assistant manager of the Danish national team under Olsen 2000-2002.

He has since coached clubs in Denmark, Spain, Russia as well as Premier League club Swansea City 2012-2014, and until recently Lekhwiya of Qatar.
