Sports News Record 4th time: Cristiano Ronaldo picks up European Golden Shoe award
OCT 13, 2015 LISTEN

Cristiano Ronaldo received his record fourth Golden Boot award on Tuesday for being the leading goalscorer in all of Europe's domestic leagues last season.

The Portuguese superstar scored 48 goals in 35 Spanish league games to claim his third Golden Boot playing for Real Madrid. His other award came with Manchester United in 2007-08 - while no other player has won four.

The 30-year-old became Madrid's all-time leading scorer on Sept. 30 with 324 goals, surpassing Raul Gonzalez's previous mark.

The Argentina phenomenon, Lionel scored 43 goals in 38 appearances last season to finish second in the list - while his international team-mate finished a distant third with 26 goals for Manchester City.

Jonathan Soriano of Red Bull Salzburg came in fourth with 31 while Barcelona's Neymar shared fifth place with Internazionale's Mauro Icardi, Antoine Griezmann of Atlético Madrid and Luca Toni of Verona.

Cristiano Ronaldo said after receiving the award that he wanted to win the Golden Shoe twice more before he retires as the Real Madrid star collected the prize for Europe's top goal scorer for the fourth time.

Winning a fourth Golden Shoe means Ronaldo has more than any other player in history, moving ahead of Barcelona star Lionel Messi, who has won the award three times.

Speaking after being presented with the trophy by Madrid president Florentino Perez at a ceremony in a hotel in the Spanish capital on Tuesday lunchtime, the 30-year-old told reporters that he was always on the search for more goals and more trophies.

HOW IS THE EUROPEAN GOLDEN BOOT DECIDED?
The award is weighted to allow players from stronger leagues, such as the Premier League and La Liga, to win even if they score fewer goals than a player in a weaker league.

Weightings are determined by the league's ranking on the Uefa coefficients, with goals scored in the top five leagues multiplied by a factor of two and goals scored in the leagues ranked six to 21 by 1.5.
