The final practice session at the Russian Grand Prix has been abandoned after a heavy crash involving Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz.

The Spaniard was taken on a stretcher into an ambulance after being extracted from his car - which was buried deep in the barriers - by medical crews The 21-year-old was conscious after he lost control during braking and skidded down a wall into the impact area and scans at hospital reportedly showed no injuries. Sainz was later taken to hospital by helicopter but scans showed no injuries.

The crash happened at Turn 13 - a tight right hander at the end of a DRS zone. The session was red flagged with 25 minutes still to run while the medical car responded to the incident.

Pictures of the scene showed tyre marks along the barrier on the outside of the track in the braking zone for the corner, suggesting Sainz made contact with the wall before reaching the run-off area. Sainz tweeted from his hospital bed that he is OK.
