Stoke City striker Mame Diouf has learnt his mother is among the dead following the disaster at Mecca.

The Senegalese striker's mother Gnilane Diouf was one of more than 700 people who were killed on the annual hajj pilgrimage in late September.

The club said in a statement: "Stoke City wish to extend sincere condolences to Mame Diouf following the tragic death of his mother.

"The club will provide Mame with all the support he needs at this extremely difficult time and our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and friends."

Gnilane's body was identified yesterday.
Diouf's sister was also on the pilgrimage and escaped with minor injuries.

The stampede happened on Thursday, September 24 during a ritual called 'stoning the devil' in the tent city of Mina, about two miles from Mecca.
