Boxing Gets Big Attraction At Chorkor

Chorkor is a fishing community in Accra, but the folks love sports and most of the youth have taken to football and boxing.

Last Friday, yours truly was on a tour of some gyms and it landed me at the Square Deal Boxing Gym where many young guys were training seriously under veteran coach Jones Hammond.

The gym had attracted a lot of people who were excited about the punches being thrown and the crafty boxers doing their own thing.

The Square Deal Gym is the most popular boxing club at Chorkor with about 20 amateur boxers aspiring to be champions on day.

There are also some few professionals like Joseph Laryea aka Madingo who once held the WBA Pan African Super Featherweight title and Raymond Commey, current WBA Pan African Super Bantamweight Champion.

Yours truly met and had a chat with the very shy Raymond Commey who did not hide his desire to become a world champion within the shortest possible time.

According to Commey with 15 fights record, winning 13 and losing 2, he wants to fight the world best and become very popular and make money.

“Am getting old as the days come and go, I need a promoter who can lead me to the world title” he said.

Raymond Commey who loves to be called Chorkor Banku and admires Bukom Banku hinted that he is very ripe for the world crown and needs support to realize his dream.

He noted that Chorkor is a place where only the tough can survive and he had been training and surviving all these years without a good promoter. He appealed to Baby Jet Promotions and other good promoters in Ghana to help him rise to the top.

Now ranked 13 by the World Boxing Association (WBA), he believes he can become Ghana’s next world champion if he is given the opportunity.

“I love boxing and that is the only thing I can do for Ghana” he said.

Ray Commey has a large following from Chorkor and he wants to do something remarkable for the community.

He express that the Squre Deal Gym needs equipment and more publicity, thanking your truly for the interview and chance to be in the media.

Commey named Bukom Banku as his best local boxer and Mayweather as his best foreign boxer. Others boxers he admire are Prof. Azumah Nelson, Alfred Kotey, Ike Quartey and the Clottey brothers.

He added his voice for a boxing coliseum in Accra, because the capital is where boxing is loved and will prefer is there is a classic boxing hall at Bukom, because that is the heart of the sport in Ghana.

Raymond Commey congratulated his cousin Richard Commey for winning the SWAG 2014 best boxer of the year and prayed that many boxers from Ghana and Africa would be rated by the world bodies and also become champions.

He is very sure of beating world champion, Guillermo Rigondeaux of Cuba if given the chance, though it would not be easy because Cubans are very good technically and naturally.

Rated 13th in the world, he wants to fight more and enter the top ten, then see what the future brings.
