HE Amarkai Amarteifio has advised members of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) to learn from their past mistakes and forge ahead for a bright future.

Speaking at the 40th awards ceremony at the Banquet Hall of the State House he noted that the past year had been very difficult and that contributed in the awards event coming very late.

“It has been a difficult year for SWAG, but on the positive side, it has provided the association with useful lessons and opportunity for self-evaluation. Those who do not learn the lessons of history are condemned to repeat the mistakes of history” he said.

He emphasized that SWAG has a new constitution and leadership who should guide members to the realization of goals and objectives.

Amarkai Amarteifio who is a patron of SWAG urged members to remain focused on their role as important partners in the promotion and development of sports by making available expertise and knowledge to sports administrators and political appointees who sometimes come into sports governance without any previous experience in sports, so as to ensure coherence and stability of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and reduce the casualty rate in the Ministry.

“The objectivity and sincerity of sports journalists in offering good advice and candid criticism will make them worthy partners in Sports Administration and will earn them the respect and trust of other partners” he said.

The experience lawyer and Consular General of the Sweden Embassy in Ghana urged SWAG to develop research and book keeping by building a viable library and research center to strengthen their position in Ghana as institutional memory of sports administration.

The 40th SWAG awards ceremony which was well attended saw America based Harrison Afful winning the footballer of the year award and Asante Kotoko claiming the premiership club of the year.

Sensational Martha Bissa won the athlete of the year on the night that 25 other sports men and women as well as corporate bodies who had contributed to sports in the year 2014.

Nana Kobina Nketia V, Omanhene of Essikado Traditional Area was the Special Guest of Honour. The respected traditional ruler made his second appearance at the prestigious event, after playing a similar role in the 36th edition, four years ago.

In attendance was the Minister of Youth and Sports Dr. Ahmed Mustapha, CEOs of MTN and ACTIVA, the major sponsors and other distinguished guests.
