On 5 October, 2011, the legendary ex-Ghana striker Edward Acquah passed on at age 76 after battling a long illness.

Nicknamed 'Mr. Sputnik' for his ferocious strikes rose to prominence following the fearsome striking partnership formed with Wilberforce Mfum.

He scored two goals in Ghana's first African Cup of Nations success against Sudan in the grand finale at the Accra Sports Stadium in 1963.

This formidable partnership was integral in Ghana's run to its first Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil in 1963.

Edward Acquah scored a total of 40 competitive goals for the Black Stars of Ghana and was the top scorer of Ghana, but Kwesi Owusu equaled his feat in the 1970's, before Asamoah Gyan the skipper of the Black Stars beat his record in 2014 to become the all-time top scorer.

The man with Sputnik shot was part of the Ghana team that played in their first ever Olympic football in Tokyo scoring a goal in the competition. He played for the Black Stars from 1955 to 1964.

Acquah was also part of the Sekondi Eleven Wise team that won the Ghana league in 1960, as the first team from the Western region to do so and the third club to win the Ghana league after Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko and joined Real Republicans in 1961 and contributed in their league and FA Cup double in 1963.
