The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has stated that they now “fiercely protect the world’s clean athletes by using new investigation methods to catch dopers.”

So, in order to help athletes with an inclination to cheat stay out of trouble, WADA has approved and published a prohibited list of substances and methods for 2016. In addition, under the new ‘Prohibited Association’ rule, the agency has published a list of support staff with “disqualifying status,” to remind athletes of people to avoid when considering coaches, trainers or medical advisors.

As usual, this is in line with the agency’s aim to promote, coordinate and monitor the fight against drugs in sports. In a recent Op-Ed, WADA President, Sir Craig Reedie warned that “traditional scientific testing now works in tandem with no fewer than nine other methods of sanctioning doping athletes.” He said the net is now closing in on doping cheats, because investigation efforts are now much more crucial than ever.

The prohibited list is one of the five International Standards that shows substances and methods prohibited in-and out -of-competition, including prescriptions banned in particular sports. And it’s primed for January 1, 2016.

As stated in the World Anti-Doping Code, substances and methods are placed on the prohibited list if they are discovered to meet two out of the following three criteria’s: violates the spirit of the sport, poses a threat to athlete health and also enhances performance of athlete. The Code is thus a clean athlete’s weapon against doping, providing clear information on how to adhere to anti-doping rules, including how to avoid suspended “Athlete Support Personnel”.

The prohibited list is thus binding for all signatories to the World Anti-Doping Code. In their bid to encourage athletes to “play true” (motto of WADA), the agency focuses on education, the Anti-Doping Administration and Management System (ADAMS), the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) to stay ahead of cheaters.

In conclusion, they also constantly work with government and law enforcement agencies committed to preventing the trafficking and possession of doping substances around the world. The list is available on WADA’s homepage. (www.wada-ama.org)
