Man United go top as Tottenham hammer Man City, Chelsea held

Manchester United went top of the Premier League as they beat Sunderland 3-0, while Manchester City were hammered 4-1 by Tottenham in the day's early game.

United struggled to break down Sunderland early on as in-form Anthony Martial started up front. Memphis Depay had a shot, but could not break through as Dick Advocaat's men held firm.

However, just before the break, Daley Blind played the ball over the top, Juan Mata took it first time and played it across the box for Depay to finish into an empty net.

And minutes after half-time United were 2-0 up. Martial drove at the defence, crossed and Wayne Rooney deflected the ball in. David De Gea made a stunning save to keep the lead intact and Mata scored another to seal their place at the top of the table by one point.

Harry Kane netted his first Tottenham goal in over 700 minutes of club football as he helped Tottenham come from behind to beat former league leaders Manchester City 4-1 at White Hart Lane.

City -- who had won the teams' last four meetings, scoring 16 goals in the process -- went ahead as Kevin De Bruyne broke free and hammered a low shot home to give them the lead, despite a questionable offside call.

Shortly before half-time, Eric Dier capitalised on De Bruyne's misplaced pass to strike a powerful equaliser from 30 yards then, just after the break, goalkeeper Willy Caballero was left nowhere as Toby Alderweireld headed home from a corner.

Ten minutes later, Kane pounced as Christian Eriksen's free kick clattered off the post to beat Caballero and make it 3-1 and Clinton Njie slotted the ball through for Erik Lamela to complete the rout late on.

Chelsea rallied with two late goals to salvage a 2-2 draw at Newcastle.

Just three days after losing to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup, Newcastle took a shock 2-0 lead by the hour mark.

Ayoze Perez buried a shot on the half volley shortly before half-time, and Georginio Wijnaldum later doubled the advantage from a header following a corner kick.

Ramires started the comeback with a thunderous strike in the 79th minute, and Willian tied it from a curling free kick three minutes from time.

Chelsea came close to taking all three points, forcing Tim Krul to make some late saves for Newcastle, but ultimately the champions could not find a winner.

Arsenal came from behind to beat Leicester 5-2 on the road thanks to a hat trick from Alexis Sanchez.

Arsenal went behind inside 15 minutes as Jamie Vardy drilled a low shot past Petr Cech. The England striker hit the post, then minutes later he controlled a pass from Danny Drinkwater and bent the ball around the diving goalkeeper.

However, the Gunners hit back a few minutes later as Vardy hit the bar with a header and Arsenal counter attacked quickly. Theo Walcott breezed past Robert Huth and finished coolly into the bottom corner. On 33 minutes, Arsenal were ahead as Hector Bellerin crossed for Alexis Sanchez to score his first of the season.

The Chilean then doubled his tally with a cross that evaded goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to find its way into the net and bagged his hat trick with a stunning shot from outside the area.

Leicester, who have made a habit of comebacks in recent weeks, netted again before the final whistle through Vardy, but could not complete another as Olivier Giroud bagged a fifth late on.

Liverpool overcame Aston Villa with a 3-2 win in a thriller at Anfield.

Liverpool went ahead inside 55 seconds as James Milner netted against his old club; the midfielder hammered a shot from the edge of the box after Phillipe Coutinho's pass.

Daniel Sturridge then got himself on the scoresheet for the first time since his return from injury with a wonderful volley in the 57th minute. Rudy Gestede got one back, but Sturridge struck again within a few minutes.

Villa would not lie down though, as Gestede's bullet header found the back of the net with 20 minutes left, but they could not force the equaliser.

In a topsy-turvy game at Upton Park, Norwich held West Ham 2-2.

Norwich went ahead as Robbie Brady bagged his first league goal for the club when he picked up a loose ball and hammered it home but the Hammers hit back before the break as Dimitri Payet's cross found Diafro Sakho in the box.

Nathan Redmond then put Norwich ahead as he was played through by Wes Hoolahan before shooting through a crowd of bodies, but Cheikhou Kouyate powered a late equaliser.

Southampton got a much-needed win, 3-1 at home to Swansea.

Saints' new signing Virgil van Dijk headed home to open the scoring from a corner then Dusan Tadic doubled the lead in the 54th minute with an effort that may end up being given to Ki Sung-Yeung.

Sadio Mane picked up his first Premier League goal since his record breaking hat trick back in May to make it 3-0 and secure the points, although Gylfi Sigurdsson netted an 83rd minute penalty consolation.

Bournemouth's 2-1 defeat against Stoke was overshadowed by a serious-looking injury to striker Callum Wilson, who was taken off on a stretcher in the first half.

Stoke went ahead as Marko Arnautovic beat two defenders before delivering a perfect cross for Jonathan Walters to score but Bournemouth found their way back through Dan Gosling in the second half. The Cherries' hearts were broken late on though as Mame Diouf headed a winner.
