Ghana defender Awal Mohammed has warned players from playing in South Africa saying the Rainbow nation is unsafe.

The former Maritzburg United player has revealed he was living with fear during his three-year spell.

Awal has signed a two-year deal with Moroccan outfit Raja Casablanca on a free transfer after leaving Saudi side Al Shabab.

The centre-back was explaining why he refused to return to the PSL and rather opted to sign for a club in North Africa.

'South Africa is not a country that anybody should travel to ply his trade. I could have decided to go back to South Africa, but after all that I experienced within my three years of play, I don't wish to play there again,' Awal said.

'I was playing with fears while in South Africa. I sometimes witnessed people being stabbed, but had to continue playing there because of poverty.'

South Africa is renowned for its high crime rate and violence.

Last year, Orlando Pirates goalkeeper and Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa died after being shot by intruders at his girlfriend’s residence.
