Sports News Hilarious or lesson: Deportivo cancel Julio Rey transfer after discovering insulting 2012 tweet
JUL 21, 2015 LISTEN

Spare a thought for 20-year-old winger Julio Rey who, after spending his entire career milling around in the Spanish fourth tier, found himself on the brink of joining Deportivo La Coruna over the weekend, only to see his big move dashed at the 11th hour.

The stage was set. Deportivo had agreed to a deal to sign Rey and had even gone as far as having his official unveiling photos taken for their website. However, as a formality, Depor had their legal department trawl back through Rey's social media activity to check for anything problematic.

It was then they dug up one of the player's tweets, sent back in 2012 -- a single, solitary, fateful tweet that ultimately resulted in the whole deal being scuppered there and then.

Unfortunately, three years ago Rey had, for reasons best known to himself, felt the need to Tweet "F--- DEPOR, F--- RIAZOR" out into the public domain (Depor being the club he was about to sign with and the Riazor being the stadium at which they play).

Once the tweet had been verified, Deportivo moved quickly to pull the plug on the transfer. Rey quickly deleted his Twitter account, but alas, it was all to be in vain. The La Liga club then published the following statement on their official website:

El Deportivo desestima el fichaje Julio Rey por insultar al Club http://t.co/fR5jaGmsW1 http://t.co/qtQSXiDJbH — RC Deportivo (@RCDeportivo) 2013-07-22 14:22:09.0
