Taking its name from the Italian Football Scandal that rocked Italy, JapeCiolpoli is the the latest match-fixing scandal to hit Zone One Division One club Japekurom Mpoasoman and one of the biggest Brong Ahafo clubs- Berekum Arsenal is largely involved in this emerging Japekurom wrongdoing.

Match-fixing in the business of football does not only jeopardize the “fair play” motto of FIFA but it renders the analysis of football pundits useless, pointless and nonsense and that is exactly my case in this JapeCiopoli.

On Sunday 28th June 2015, Berekum Arsenal traveled to defeat Japekurom Mpoasoman 3-2 during Week 20 of the GN Bank Division One League at the Japekurom Presby Park with the visiting Arsenal taking a shocking 3-0 lead before the home team rallied back to score twice. The win saw Arsenal reclaim the summit of the Zone One standings with 42 points as rivals Berlin FC lost away to Tamale All Stars.

Fortress Presby Park Broken With Cheaky Ease

That was how the game ended and it was the first time Mpoasoman had conceded more than a goal at home and again it was the very first time the club had lost a game at the Japekurom Presby Park.

Before Week 20, I tagged Japekurom Mpoasoman as the darling boys of the Zone One due to their flawless home record which stood at nine wins out of nine games (P9 W9 D0 L0) and conceding just 1 goal at home while bagging in 18 goals.

Going into Week 20, My analysis and prediction for this game was at least a scoring draw or a resounding win for the Japekurom boys and with all this statistics, I coudn’t have been any wrong but practically I was always aware that the reverse could happen because this is the game of football we are talking about but with Berekum Arsenal whose second round form far from impressive out-muscling and defeating Mpoasoman to win 3-2 at the citadel Presby Park and the fact that they went 3-0 at a point cast a big doubt about the fairness of this game. Yes.

My prior theoretical analysis which was based on facts and current club form was thus made nonsense and baseless because a mighty hand had worked for one party to throw game.

Truth be told, this is Ghana and stuffs like these happen on daily basis and it is that one with a supporting evidence that we can talk much about.

ALSO- Berlin FC beating Tamale Utrecht 1-0 in Tamale on Day 16 is another game that needs to be investigated into.

On condition of anonimity, a Japekurom Mpoasoman player has been speaking to me about the rot that his club has been subjected to by Yakuku Moro’s Berekum Arsenal who have capitalized on the precarious financial situation of the former third-tier side to render them non-competitive in their matches against Arsenal and make them really aggressive against other opponents.

” Charley the club has no money 000. If they do not do this they will not get money to even travel for away matches. That is why they sold the match to Arsenal and that is the only match they have sold and will sell no more games.” the player reveals.

Berekum Arsenal Sole Beneficiary of Mpoasoman Fixed Games

“It is only Arseanl that Mpoasoman will sell their matches to. Berlin FC made a mistake. They should have negotiated with Mpoasoman long time before the game. Yakubu has stayed in Japekurom before so he has strong connection here. He (Yakubu) knows the opinion leaders in the town so it was difficult that Mpoasoman were not going to sell the game.” he added.

Yakubu Moro Pays Winning Bonus to Mpoasoman
“Even when Mpoasoman played Berlin FC, it was Yakubu Moro who paid the winning bonus for our players for defeating Berlin. Each player received 100 GHC and he gave the team some money. So looking at all these, the club had to let him (Arsenal) to win the game. As for our home it is very difficult to beat us if the club does not sell the game”.

The Ghana Football Association has always reiterated its commitment in fighting corruption in the local game and this latest revelation should serve as yet another wake up call to set up measures in dealing with such canker.

When there is corruption in football, sports pundits, administrators, and fans alike are deceived by manipulated results and the much importance we attach to tackling this canker, the better.
