Police arrest Kwadwo Asamoah's imposter who defrauded unsuspecting people

A 29-year old Accountancy student of the Takoradi Polytechnic has been arrested by the Police for allegedly using the name of Ghanaian international footballer Kwadwo Asamoah of the Black Stars and Juventus to defraud members of the public.

A 29-year old Accountancy student of the Takoradi Polytechnic has been arrested by the Police for allegedly using the name of Ghanaian international footballer Kwadwo Asamoah of the Black Stars and Juventus to defraud members of the public. 

The suspect, Felix Adjartey Xyvkes, allegedly posed on social media as the footballer and managed to collect an unspecified amount of money from supporters and fans of the footballer.

According to the Director of the Fraud Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Superintendent Felix Koku Mawusi, during the latter part of 2014, the suspect created a facebook account using the name and particulars of the footballer. Facebook page

He said the suspect posted on the fake facebook page that he (Kwadwo Asamaoh) was in a camp in Italy but had been severely injured during a training session and needed some financial assistance to enable him to treat his injury.

Chief Supt Mawusi said after posting the injury story, the suspect also opened two MTN Mobile Money accounts using the number 0249478975,which he registered with the name, Kwasi and the other number 0244214989, registered in the name, Mat Eva to facilitate his fraudulent activities.

He indicated that the suspect also provided an account number at ECOBANK Silver Star Branch in Accra and other branches in Kumasi and Takoradi and directed people to pay GH¢1,000 and above through the bank account or mobile money. Fans and followers

He said a number of unsuspecting fans and followers of Kwadwo Asamoah contacted the suspect thinking they were communicating with the footballer himself and started sending the money.

The footballer was not on facebook so he did not know about the deal until a friend informed him about what was going on and he reported the impersonation to the police.

Investigations by the police revealed that the suspect had used the same means to demand an iPhone 6+ valued at $700 from a young Ghanaian businesswoman in Dubai.

The suspect told the businesswoman that he wanted to give the phone to his mother as a birthday gift but was not allowed to leave the camp in Italy to buy it. Surveillance

Intelligence officers mounted surveillance on the suspect and monitored his activities.

Chief Supt Mawusi said on June 11, 2015, the suspect, who was informed about the arrival of the iPhone 6+, went to a courier office in Takoradi and paid handling and clearance charges amounting to GH¢124.00. He insisted that he would pay custom duty in Accra.

On June 19, 2015, he went to a courier office in Accra and paid a custom duty of $200 and after collecting the phone he was arrested.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the number of people who paid money into the said account.

Chief Supt Mawusi appealed to members of the public who had paid money into the account to report to the nearest police station or the CID headquarters to assist in investigations.
