Tamale resident wins Northern Regional Marathon

Tamale, May 25, GNA - Malik Yakubu, a resident of Tamale has emerged winner in the Northern Regional Marathon held in Tamale on Monday after beating off competition from about 1,500 other athletes who participated in the exercise.

Malik Yakubu's prize is a plasma television, which he will receive at a later date in Accra. Seven other individuals, who took part in the 10.5 kilometre competition, which started from Jubilee Park through some principal streets of the metropolis and back to the Jubilee Park in Tamale, also won various prizes.

They included Atamburi Yakubu and Yussif Malik, first and second runners up in the male category and they took home a table-top refrigerator and gas cooker respectively whiles Abini Eugene, from Kumasi won the female category with Felicia Pomeda and Ibrahim Rabi emerging first and second runners up taking home a blender, a rice cooker and an electric iron in that order.

The rest were Abukari Yakubu and Seidu Ayisha, both Tamale residents, emerged winners at the male and female physically challenged categories and took home an electric iron each. The Northern Regional Marathon was organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in partnership with the Millennium Marathon Sports Limited to amongst others promote good health amongst the people.

It was also to unearth young talents as well as promote the country on the international scene.Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, Deputy Northern Regional Minister congratulated the competitors for participating in the exercise.

Mr Rowland Bruce, Creativity, Branding and Media Coordinator of Millennium Marathon Sports Limited expressed satisfaction at the event and assured of an improved organization in the subsequent editions.

The rest of the regional marathons are Bolgatanga, May 30, Wa June 20, Sunyani June 27, Kumasi, July 1, Ho, July 11, Koforidua, July 18, Cape Coast, July 25 and Sekondi/Takoradi, July 25. Meanwhile, the national marathon will be held in Accra on September six this year with about 1,500 international athletes expected to participate in the event.
