Massive crowd in Accra derby fails to translate into gate proceeds

Great Olympics missed out on a big pay day in their derby draw against Hearts of Oak with the massive attendance not translating into the gate proceeds received by the club.

The Wonder club held the Phobians to a thrilling stalemate in the Accra derby on Sunday.

The game was witnessed by close to 20,000 spectators – one of the biggest crowd recorded so far in this season's Premier League.

But the numbers in the stands failed to translate into the gate proceeds received.

Great Olympics' board member Fred Pappoe reveals most of the fans in the stands got entry into the stadium without paying.

“There were a lot of people at the stadium and the game was good but the gate proceeds was shocking,” he said.

“A lot of the fans you see in the stands did not pay to get in.

“They come to the gate with all sort of reasons. Some say they've suffered for the club so why should they pay.

“Others are also not Great Olympics supporters but refuse to pay.

“It is a sub-culture that must change.”
