Never give up: Konadu hails 'mental strength' of Black Stars
28.01.2015 LISTEN

Maxwell Konadu is convinced his team are mentally ready for any challenge that comes their way at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking in the wake of Ghana's magnificent comeback victory over South Africa in the final Group C game on Tuesday night, the assistant coach of the Black Stars said his side were prepared for anything but focused on achieving the needed result no matter the impediments.

But first, Konadu was magnanimous in hailing the performance of their battered opponents who go home after finishing bottom of the pile on a solitary one point garnered from three games.

"First of all congratulations to the South Africa team, they played very well. They are not a bad side even though its a young team. The competition hasn't gone well for them but they have to learn from it and come back stronger," Konadu acknwoledged.

He went on to elaborate the fighting spirit which enabled the Black Stars to rise form being down at halftime to turn the game on its heads with two goals in the last 20 minutes.

The Black Stars not only qualified from the cusp of elimination, but also went top of the much acclaimed 'Group C' even after losing their first match in this tournament to Senegal.

"Mentally, we were very ready, we knew anything could happen. We conceded the first goal , we knew it would be difficult but we had to come back, we had no choice," Maxwell Konadu told Supersport at the Estadio de Mongomo right after the game.

"We have a set of players that are determined to the very last moment, they never give up. So when you watch the games we won and the manner in which we did, you will see that we never give up and fight till the end," the Black Stars assistant coach said.

He added, more of a warning for the rest teams still in Equatorial Guinea: "And that's what we will take all the way forward in the tournament."

The Black Stars must wait until Wednesday night to know which of Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Mali or Guinea they will face in Sunday's quarter final, as Group D conclude the group phase with teh section still very tight, all four sides on two points and in with a shout. Follow @thedonplato
