Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim Mashaba said the team needs to work on the basics after crashing out of the Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-1 loss to Ghana on Tuesday night.

Bafana matched the West Africans in the opening half, taking the lead through a stunning 17th minute volley from Mandla Masango.

However,  Ghana dominated the second period, deservedly hitting back through strikes from John Boye and Andre Ayew to advance to the quarter-finals as Group C winners along with Algeria.

Mashaba said: "I think we gave it our best. We came here and scored a goal but we couldn't consolidate.

"In the first half we played very well. In the second half, in the first 10 minutes we started to sit back. We tried to push them out, made changes, but it didn't work out.

"We need to go back to our basics of playing football, when to do things, how to do them, and where to do them."

He added: "We need that ability to kill off a game, that is one of the things I am talking about when we say the basics.

"We needed to take our time, but we were knocking it back to them and that's where the problem was coming from."
