West Ham United owner David Sullivan has believes some bad signings by former manager Avram Grant contributed to the club's demotion from the English Premier League in 2011.
Sullivan made reference to some January transfer deals which did not yield dividends.
He felt Grant, who was appointed for just season in-charge of the Hammers, spent unwisely and failed to sign players who could turn the fortunes of the club around.
“It's very hard to castigate certain players but under (previous manager) Avram (Grant) we signed a player who was on £90,000-a-week and we paid his full wages and a big fee to an agent. Did that player help us a lot? I don't think so. But you are desperate,” Sullivan said.
“We signed Robbie Keane on loan. The classic example. I said to Avram 'who do you need to score goals?' He said 'get me Robbie Keane and he will keep you up'.
“Well we got Robbie and he was injured, unfortunately. It was a fortune – a big loan fee, wages, if we stayed up we had to sign him permanently. When he was available he was a decent player. But he was injured most of the time.
“The alternative – Avram's second-choice – was (Daniel) Sturridge who went to Bolton. It was a two-bob loan. No wages. No loan fee. And he got a pile of goals for Bolton. If we had signed the second-choice we'd have got lucky and while there is an element of luck with all signings in January it is even more so.”
