Sour Christmas for Ghana star Asamoah Gyan as he fails to make CAF's final three-man shortlist for African Player of the Year Gong

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan is out of the race for the 2014 African Footballer of the Year award after failing to make the final three-man shortlist.

CAF announced on Thursday, the Al Ain failed to make the cut following votes from national team head coaches or technical directors.

Gyan had a successful 2014 campaign and was brimming with confidence of winning the coveted prize in African football.

He scored two goals at the World Cup finals in Brazil to become Africa's top scorer in the history of the tournament with a total of six goals.

The 29-year-old  overtook then record holder Cameroon legend Roger Milla who has five goals.

Gyan also won the UAE Arabian Gulf League goal king and the Asian Champions League top scorer award.

The award will be contested by Gabon midfielder Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama and Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure, who holds the title.

For the African Player of the Year (Based in Africa), Algerian duo, Akram Djahnit and El Hedi Belamieri are in contention with DR Congo forward Firmin Mubele Ndombe.

The winners will be unveiled at the Glo-CAF Awards Gala on Thursday, 8 January 2015 in Lagos, Nigeria.”
