Ex Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has described the launch of the Tornado Ball as giving back to society.

According to Appiah, the initiative, a joint one with the football's manufacturers – Alive & Kicking – is one of the many things he was doing with his foundation – Stephen Appiah Foundation.

Explaining why the ball should be patronized by all, he said, 'It is the first and only ball fully made with locally acquired materials. It serves as a life-line for the over 36 young able and physically challenged men and women who depend on ventures like this to earn a living.'

He added: 'A percentage of its revenue will directly go to support the work of the Stephen Appiah Foundation in the areas of health and education through sports.

'My promise to the world is that this is not the end. I will continue in my own small way to bring up programs and projects that will go a long way in helping the under privileged in our society.'

Youth and Sports Minister Hon Mahama Ayariga, who conducted the launch and the official kick-off, lauded the manufacturer and Appiah for indigenizing the ball.

He revealed that Ghana is identified with football, yet the country has not indigenized the sport.

He pledged the Ministry's support for the initiative and urged corporate Ghana to rally behind the campaign.

Alive & Kicking Country Director Chris Roe commended Ghanaians' exceptional passion for football.

He said his outfit produces 300,000 ball a month and indicated the material used in manufacturing is tailored to suit the African condition.

UK Ambassador to Ghana, Jon Benjamin, who hosted the colorful cocktail event, expressed the hope that the ball would be adopted by all schools in the country and pledged his outfit's support.

Already, Nestle Ghana Limited, producers of Milo has purchased 2,000 pieces, Nana Sam Brew Butler, former FA chairman – 500 pieces, Dreamz FC, Primeval Media, Henkoq, among others each bought a number of the balls.
