Ghana winger Christian Atsu has returned to Chelsea to receive medical treatment despite the retention of his loan agreement with Everton.

The 22-year-old is out with a muscle problem in an Europa League game against Russian club Kuban Krasnodar earlier this month.

Atsu has now returned to Stamford Bridge to receive superior treatment in a bid to return him to full fitness ahead of schedule.

“We have sent him back to Chelsea and he's receiving medical attention there,” Everton manager Roberto Martinez revealed.

“We're working together with them to make sure he comes back as quickly as possible.

“We're pretty confident that he's not going to be too bad.

“These sorts of injuries happen to players like Christian who are sprinters.

“With these muscle injuries you have to monitor them and be careful they are fully fit.

“We're trying to make sure he's back in the next two to three weeks maximum.”

Atsu's loan switch to Everton however remains active despite his return to Chelsea to receive medical treatment.

The Ghana international is expected back at Goodison Park in the New Year where he is expected to return to first team action.
