Martha Bissah
Youth Olympics gold medalist Martha Bissah says athletics has a great future despite the little attention accorded it in recent years.

Bissah, who left good footprints in this year's Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, is hopeful the coming years will see a restoration of the dwindling fortunes of athletics.

She put up a sterling performance in the 2014 Youth Summer Olympics to win gold in the girls' 800m event, Ghana's very first gold medal in any Olympics.

She is currently embarking on a routine road work (jogging) which she does daily from her Pokuase base near Amasaman in Accra to Kwabenya in 32 minutes.

The young athlete told DAILY GUIDE SPORTS recently at the El-Wak Stadium that 'from what I saw in today's event (Ghana's Fastest Human), I can say that athletics has a great future. The athletes showed great potential, and I believe with good technical support and determination from the athletes, Ghana will be the beneficiary.

'I am really looking forward to next year. I am back to work after the Olympics feat. I was doing 35 minutes road work from where I currently live, Pokuasi to Kwabenya, but I have now improved the time to 32 minutes.

'There are many upcoming events in 2015. I don't want to take chances – that is why I have started early to win more laurels for myself and my country. If our big men will support the sport, I believe athletics will bounce back like before,' she added.

Martha is a nominee for this year's Happy FM Sports Fans Awards in the Sports Personality of the year category.
