The world number three carded a five-under 66 at the Australian Golf Club in Sydney, improving eight shots from his opening round to dispel any fear he would miss the cut.

The 2013 Masters champion stormed up the leaderboard after a bogey-free round that included three birdies and an eagle, sitting tied for ninth following the second round.

Scott first picked up shots on Friday with a three at the par-five 14th before birdieing 16 and 18 as he hit the turn full of confidence.

On his back nine, he also birdied the par-four sixth before hitting the clubhouse with a then course-record 66, but Scott predicted the record would not last - and he was right.

"We'll see how long that [record] lasts," said Scott, before American Jamie Lovemark carded a 65.

"We had a good morning for it this morning just for the sake of getting myself back in the tournament.

"I guess it's fun to shoot a course record. I'm pretty sure it won't hold up for the rest of the week but it feels good anyway."

Scott battled the elements early in his second round and claims his eagle on his fifth hole of the day sparked him.

"Momentum is a big thing," the 11-time PGA Tour winner said.

"I got off to a bad start - the wind was tricky. I didn't scramble well in the round [on Thursday] when I had to [and] it was slipping away from me.

"I didn't start much better to be honest. I was scrambling but I scrambled well and all of a sudden I hit a couple of good shots down 14 and made an eagle.

"Momentum is on your side then.
"It's an incredible different feeling to being two under than two over.

"I tried to keep that rolling and I needed to as it was the only chance I had to be in touch with the lead."
