Hughes passed away in Sydney, two days after being hit in the neck by a ball, while playing in the Sheffield Shield.

Thursday's play in Sharjah has subsequently been converted to a rest day. The rest of the Test will be played out starting from Friday.

Tributes poured in from across the cricketing world, and New Zealand Cricket offered their own condolences while delivering the news.

"Cricket is a family," said NZC chief executive David White in a statement.

"Quite apart from its super-competitive edge, it is a game of kinship, mateship and friendship; of camaraderie and community.

"To lose one of our own in such tragic circumstances is unthinkable, and our thoughts are with those who are close to Phillip; who know him, or have simply enjoyed the wonderful brand of cricket he brought to the game.

"To those people, and all others who share in his loss, may I pass on our heartfelt condolences."

The Pakistan Cricket Board also posted a message of sympathy on their official Twitter account.

"Pakistan's cricketing fraternity is saddened by the passing away of Phil Hughes. All our thoughts prayers are with Phil his family. #RIP"
