The 20-year-old, who made his debut for the national team against Fiji on November 15, sustained the issue after coming off the bench in the 34-16 defeat to New Zealand on Saturday.

Following tests, Ospreys medical performance manager Chris Towers says Smith will be sent for surgery, likely ruling him out of Wales' Six Nations campaign.

"Nicky suffered a significant pectoral tear playing for Wales against New Zealand on Saturday," said Towers. "He's had scans and been reviewed by specialists and, following discussions, the decision is that the best course of treatment is for him to undergo surgery to repair the damage.

"He is looking at up to four months recovery post-operation."

Fellow Ospreys front-rower Duncan Jones could be out for up to six weeks due to a medial ligament injury, while another prop - Ryan Bevington - is "another couple of months" from a return after the decision was made to send him for further surgery on a hamstring problem.

Winger Jeff Hassler, meanwhile, is being assessed after suffering a "significant knee ligament injury" during Canada's clash with Romania at the weekend.
