NOV 26, 2014 LISTEN

The Giants' third baseman played seven seasons at AT and T Park, helping them claim three World Series titles in the past five years - and completed a catch for the final out in game seven as they beat the Kansas City Royals in October.

And Sandoval said after 106 home runs and 462 runs batted in from 946 hits, he was looking for a new challenge - as the slugger arrives at Fenway Park after a turbulent two-year period for the Red Sox.

"I want a new challenge. I need a new challenge," he said.

"I know that I had a great career in San Francisco. But I'm going to have a new one here."

Despite switching from the National League to the American League - the latter open to the use of a designated hitter - Sandoval is still keen to assume fielding responsibilities.

Sandoval is listed as weighing over 111 kilograms, but will work on his fitness to take the bag at third base.

"I'm going to be taking care of those things to play third base," he said.

Sandoval will link up with fellow cult figure David Ortiz - or Big Papi, as he is known to the Fenway faithful - which was a notable attraction to joining Boston.

"It's exciting for me to be with Hanley [Ramirez] and David Ortiz," Sandoval said.

"To be Papi's teammate - 162 games, all that with him - for me, it's going to be a very exciting time."
