Federer claimed a 6-4 6-2 6-2 win in the fourth rubber, giving Switzerland their first ever Davis Cup crown with a 3-1 victory.

With Jo-Wilfried Tsonga unable to play due to an elbow injury, Gasquet - who had lost 12 of 14 previous matches against Federer - replaced him.

But Gasquet proved no match, and he felt it was the best performance Federer had ever produced against him.

"First of all, I'm very disappointed to lose in three sets," Gasquet said.

"It's always difficult, especially because they won. But I tried my best I just need to improve and you know, he played very good.

"That's the first time he played that level against me, I think he played the best match against me I would like to say. And of course, he has experience with this kind of matches and it's disappointing for me to lose."

Tsonga said the injury prevented him from competing at a level he felt was good enough to represent his country.

"Today I don't really know. I didn't do a diagnostic and today, you know, I feel the pain," he said.

"Of course, I will go on court and fight as much as possible but today, with this injury, I was just not able to go on court and be the best chance on the court for France."
