Argentine footballing 'god' Lionel Messi smacked the La Liga all time goal record on Saturday with his 253rd goal in 289 matches for the Spanish juggernauts.

The Barca goal machine is first on the Barcelona all-time goal scoring billboard with 368 goals in all competitions since making his senior team appearance for the Catalans in 2004.

In 2011, Messi scored a total of 73 goals in a single season in all competitions to become the first and the only player to achieve that feet in the history of the La Liga. The Barca forward also has under his sleeves the bragging right of scoring the highest number of goals in the league in a season (50).

On 29th October 2011, Messi scored the fastest ever hat trick for Barcelona in 17 minutes (Barcelona versus Real Mallorca at Camp Nou).

His record transcends the shores of Spain to Europe where he's currently on level with Raul Gonzalez as the leading goal scorers of the UEFA Champions League with 71 goals each but Messi's tally is quite enviable haven't scored 71 in 90 matches as against Raul's 71 in 142 games.

Again, Messi won the top goal scorer award in the competition for four consecutive times from 2008/2009 season to 2011/2012 season. In the 2012 season, Messi scored 14 goals.

However, on March 7 2012, Messi became the first player in the history of the Champions League to score five goals (pentiple) in a match against German side, Bayer Leverkusen at Camp Nou.

In terms of hat tricks in Champions League, Messi is unmatched. He leads the hat trick tabloids with four in total.
