The in-form right-hander, named player of the series in Australia's 4-1 one-day international series win over South Africa, pulled up sore after Sunday's match.

But Smith was named in the 12-man squad for the first Test, which starts at the Gabba on December 4.

In a statement on Monday, Cricket Australia chief medical officer John Orchard said Smith was still a likely starter in Brisbane.

"Steve's scan showed a low grade quadriceps muscle strain and has been ruled out of tomorrow's New South Wales Bupa Sheffield Shield game in Sydney as a result," Orchard said.

"His current prognosis is that he is likely to be fit to play in the first Test in Brisbane in the middle of next week.

"He will stay in Sydney for further physiotherapy treatment and assessment over the rest of the week."

Smith's absence would be a blow for Australia, who could be without captain Michael Clarke (hamstring).
