Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist shut out the Eastern Conference's Atlantic division leaders, making 21 saves for the Madison Square Garden hosts.

Dominic Moore put the Rangers ahead midway through the first period, before Martin St Louis and Chris Kreider had a hand in both second-period goals as New York went 3-0 up.

Derek Stepan doubled their lead on St Louis and Kreider assists, before St Louis scored in the final five minutes of the period - Kreider involved in setting up his team-mate - as they moved well clear of the Canadian side.

Carl Hagelin and Rick Nash added goals after the final break, as the Rangers moved third in the East's Metropolitan standings.

The Canadiens remain three points clear top of Atlantic, although have played one more game than closest rivals the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Western Conference Pacific division leaders the Anaheim Ducks moved two points clear at the helm, although the Vancouver Canucks climbed to second with a victory.

The Ducks downed the Arizona Coyotes 2-1, while the Canucks - on the back of Hansen's treble - thrashed the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1.

Vancouver celebrated Daniel Sedin's 1,000th NHL game with a runaway victory, as Hansen scored two of the Canucks' three final-period goals.

The St Louis Blues went top of the West's Central standings after twice coming from behind to beat the Winnipeg Jets 4-2.

Alexander Steen assisted for the Blues' two equalisers, before Ryan Reaves broke the tie game early in the last stanza before Paul Stastny's late empty-netter sealed the two points.
