The pair teamed up to win Saturday's doubles rubber 6-3 7-5 6-4 against French duo Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet in front of another packed crowd in Lille.

Their win gave Switzerland a 2-1 lead with two matches to play and came only a week after they had exchanged words following an incident at the ATP Tour Finals.

Wawrinka took exception to Federer's wife, Mirka, shouting out during their gripping semi-final in London.

However, they proved that was all forgotten with a clinical display on Saturday, and Federer can now end Switzerland's wait to win the Davis Cup by beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Sunday.

If the world number two fails to finish off the job then the tie will be decided by the final rubber between Wawrinka and Gael Monfils.

Wawrinka said: "It's good to be one-up tonight. We have two chances tomorrow to get the point.

"It's a really tough one for sure, it doesn't matter who is going to play - if it's Jo or Gael.

"Gael was playing amazing yesterday so if I have to play I'm ready to play.

"I'm really happy with the way we were playing today. We were really aggressive, we knew what we had to do. We did a good job."

Wawrinka also insisted that he and Federer complemented each other perfectly.

"We know each other so well, it's easy for us to play together," the 29-year-old continued. "Today we both played really well and we both did our job, its good to win a doubles game like that."

Federer thanked the Swiss medical staff for ensuring he was able to take to the court after a back injury had ruled him out of last Sunday's ATP World Tour Finals showpiece.

He said: "I'm not emotional in such that I can't speak, but it's a big relief. The medical staff...thanks to them and thanks for getting me back on to the court.

"Stan has been unbelievably supportive and Seve [Switzerland captain Severin Luthi] and the coaching staff did a wonderful job of getting us ready today."
