Misbah ul-Haq's men are guaranteed at least a draw from the three-match series as they recovered from 75-4 on the final day after Ross Taylor (104) had led New Zealand to 250.

Having begun Friday on 167-6, Taylor got past the 100 mark for the first time against Pakistan while partner Mark Craig made a useful 34.

Tim Southee (20) went down fighting, hitting three sixes in his short time at the crease late on, before Pakistan set about getting the 261 required to extend their series lead.

Wickets of Taufeeq Umar (4), Azhar Ali (24), Shan Masood (40) and Misbah (0) gave New Zealand hope of drawing level at 1-1.

However, a strong sixth-wicket partnership from Sarfraz Ahmed (24) and Asad Shafiq (41) took Pakistan to 196-5 before close, with attentions now turning to the third and final Test, which begins in Sharjah on Wednesday.

Looking to put as many runs as possible on the board before putting Pakistan back into bat, Taylor and Craig took their partnership to 60.

Taylor had made just 118 in his previous six Test innings but found form on Friday to complete a 12th Test century with a single to midwicket.

However, Craig found Rahat Ali at long-on off Yasir Shah (5-79) in the 64th over before Taylor was stumped by Sarfraz two balls later after Shah found an outside edge.

With things unravelling for New Zealand, Ish Sodhi and, in particular, Southee threw caution to the wind to bolster their hopes as Southee made 20 off just five balls, before being caught by Zulfiqar Babar to close the innings.

Requiring 261 in 72 overs, Pakistan were dealt an early blow when they lost Taufeeq Umar in the second over, BJ Watling taking a simple catch off the bowling of Southee (1-21).

That was the only wicket before lunch, but Azhar Ali and Shan Masood fell in the space of three overs after putting on a healthy stand of 62 before captain Misbah went for a duck in the 32nd over to leave his side 75-4.

The in-form Younis fell six runs short of his half-century before Shafiq and Sarfraz offered further resistance as they made 47 from their 11.3 overs to ensure a draw.
