The pre-tie focus surrounded Roger Federer - his back issue and his alleged stoush with countryman Wawrinka at the ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Following his convincing 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-2 victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the opening rubber in France, Wawrinka claimed to have been undervalued by Arnaud Clement's side.

"It was really important to start [with a win], that's why I had to show them that we are there," Wawrinka told the Davis Cup website.

"We had a really short preparation. It was not easy for us in the team, with everything that's happened, with Roger's back and everything, so it was important to show them that maybe they were a little bit too focussed on Roger.

"Me - I did my job. I showed them that I'm not number four [in the world] for nothing, I did a great match today.

"I'm really happy the way I'm playing, but again it's only the first point."

Federer went on to lose the second rubber to Gael Monfils 6-1 6-4 6-3 to leave the tie level heading to Saturday's doubles.

But Wawrinka was thrilled to have taken on Tsonga and beaten him at his own game.

"I feel really great, it was really good from me. I was playing really aggressive," the Australian Open champion said.

"I went for it, I had one bad game in the second set on my serve that...maybe I was rushing a bit.

"But in general, I felt that I was the stronger player on the court. That's why I took the match."

Wawrinka said he will not hold the match win in any regard if it is in vain, as the Swiss sit two points away from a maiden Davis Cup crown.

"For me, it's a really good match. I will rate that match if we win the match [tie]," he said.

"If we win the tie, then it will be really amazing for me. If we lose, doesn't matter if I play well or not at the weekend."
