Voynov, 24, is alleged to have caused injury to his wife, who was in hospital at the time of the defenseman's arrest.

He was arrested on October 20, before the Los Angeles County District Attorney office charged him with one felony count on Thursday.

The league suspended Voynov at the time of his arrest.

He will face court on December 1, with a conviction carrying a maximum penalty of nine years prison.

The LA franchise said they backed the league's response to Voynov's arrest.

"We maintain our support of the NHL's indefinite suspension of Slava Voynov," a Kings statement read.

"As an organization we will continue to closely monitor the developments of the legal proceedings and work in partnership with the NHL to determine the proper course of action in the future."

Voynov's legal representative Craig Renetzky said the player maintains his innocence despite the charges.

"Mr Voynov is extremely disappointed that the district attorney's office elected to file charges," Renetzky said, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

"Mr Voynov maintains his innocence and looks forward to clearing his name in court. We remain confident."
